Veterans Affairs Canada will soon be sharing a draft 10-year strategic plan for commemoration that focuses on the future of our remembrance and recognition programing. In the coming months, we’ll be consulting with Veterans and members of the public on this new strategy to gain input on how we all can best recognize and commemorate Canada’s military, peacekeeping and humanitarian missions. Veterans, CAF members, RCMP Veterans and their family members can register in advance and stay informed of the launch date for these consultations. Those who are interested can sign up at letstalkveterans.ca to ensure they don’t miss out.

We want to engage:

Canadian Armed Forces members
Veterans
RCMP Veterans who served in international policing
Families of those who served
Stakeholders
Indigenous people
Other Canadians, including youth and newcomers

As we expand the focus of our commemorative programming we want to consider initiating new types of activities or events.

Your opinion matters in how we adapt to Canada’s ever-changing landscape, and how we reach our diverse population of Veterans, former RCMP members and their families.

Volunteer Treasurer Position

Due to our treasurer taking a consulting job with the province of Ontario she has had to step down.

The treasurer position is the most important position within our Branch tracking and reporting our finances is a key position. In fact, our governing by-laws will not allow the branch to operate without this person.

We are seeking a person to take this position supporting our executive and branch. The position does come with a small honorarium ($1000) for the year. The position is presently being set up so that the work can be conducted 85% virtually from home with minimumal time required in the branch.

Treasures required to confirm and make a weekly bank deposit, pay invoices monthly, work with bar stewards to ensure cash count, pay employees through Ceridian payroll company. Work with the president with branch operation on funding. Attend monthly meetings presenting a report to membership.

We are suspending food services on Friday night due to COVID-19 and limiting the Legion to members only for the next few weeks until things in the city calm down a little. We are hoping this is only for a few weeks.

Branch 23 traditionally has a draw for a free annual membership for anyone who has paid their next years' dues by Remembrance Day of this year.

The draw was November 12, 2020- done by Dean Schmeisser and witnessed by Arleigh Robar and Legion Secretary.

The winner is Paul Pilon, a new Ordinary member this year.

Remembrance Day Service and Wreath Purchase Lunenburg

Remembrance Day Service and Wreath Purchase Lunenburg

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, businesses and organizations are asked to make cash donations to the Branch #23 Poppy Fund. Family members of deceased veterans are asked to make cash donations in memory of their loved one. If families wish to purchase wreaths, they are still available but must be picked up at the Lunenburg Legion between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday –Thursday or Saturday between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.. All wreaths will need to be taken by the purchaser and placed at the Cenotaph or at a grave site by the purchaser prior to the Remembrance Day Service. Any individual not from the area purchasing a wreath will have it placed at the Cenotaph by the Legion prior to the Remembrance Service. Names will be read at the Remembrance Service as usual; however, personal wreaths will not be placed during that service and there will be no parade.

Citizens of Lunenburg are asked to remember individually and watch the televised scaled back Remembrance Day Service from Ottawa. Veterans, family members of veterans and Legion members wishing to attend the Cenotaph in person, must practice social distancing by family bubbles and practice mask wearing should distancing not be possible. The Nova Scotia COVID-19 restriction for outside events is 250 with social distancing. To purchase wreaths or make donations in honour of deceased veterans please contact the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 23, Lunenburg by calling (902)634-4215 between 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday or on Saturday during the same hours.

Remembering the fallen is our duty and we will remember them .

Open hours are 2-6 PM Monday to Saturday. CLOSED SUNDAYS

Due to low attendance on Sundays, it has been decided that effective immediately the Legion will not be open on Sundays. As everyone knows, these are very difficult times and we are losing money every Sunday we are open. It is the Legion's survival which is at stake and why this decision has been made.

This will be revisited from time to time to see if the decision can be changed.

Moving the Berlin Wall to the new location at the Lunenburg Legion

James J Kinley brought a segment of the Berlin Wall to Lunenburg in the late nineties and put on display at the entrance to Lunenburg Foundry.

The Kinley family owns and operates the foundry.

He wanted to honour the German heritage of the Lunenburg area.

Yesterday, with the help of Demone Monuments, it was moved from the foundry to the front of the Lunenburg Legion where it can be viewed by residents and tourists.

Thank you Demones for providing labour and equipment for a smooth transfer to the Legion.

Legion for reopening June 12th

Good morning everyone,

As you have probably heard in the news over the past few days, Premier McNeil is slowing reopening the province effective June 5th.

Your Executive has been meeting regularly during this crisis trying to manage things financially, and now to prepare the Legion for reopening. This will not be business as usual. We have many health and other protocols which must be adhered to in order to open safely. The safety of our members and our staff is our priority.

We will not be reopening on June 5th, but we hope to have everything in place to be able to reopen on Friday, June 12th for happy hour. As we get closer to the date, I will send out an update to confirm the reopening. We have a lot to do between now and then to be successful.

Thanks you for your patience and understanding during this difficult time. And as always, please continue to be diligent and stay safe.
